Re: 66 Toro Ignition system question

All the more reason to dump the points or cheap electronic conversion, and go with an HEI or other full-voltage ignition system that will not fry at 18+ volts.

Better spark, too.

Re: Replacing rear frame rails on a 1966

I've been debating how/when to do that also. My Toro is so rotted, anyone with a brain would call it a parts car...but of course I've got so much into it I can't let it go. My trunk floor and the box-section reinforcements under the trunk are so bad I could push a cat through the rust holes. All tha...

Re: Pulling, and rebuilding my '66 425

Mostly, it's performance is definitely not where it should be... It's slower than my El Camino with a paultry 305. Do the secondary throttle blades open? Common for Q-jet carbs to have the secondaries stick shut. I'd also like to get some hardened valves in it so that I don't have to add lead subst...

Re: 66 Toro Ignition system question

GM uses a "resistor wire" instead of a plain wire with a discrete resistor.

The wire will be fabric-covered.

Re: Msd ignition

HEI distributor? I had heard that there were clearance issues in the 66 toronado. I would like to use one because the junkyards are full of them. Will the 350 cid distributor fit the the 425 toronado? is there an electronic- non-HEI distributor in the olds junkyard? I have had good luck with the Pe...

Re: Msd ignition

And for the HEI its good till 6000rpm and that it! Folklore. HEI will go well above 6K, although the spark energy is somewhat reduced--just as a points system can go above 6K (with reduced power). If you spend a lot of time above 6K, a spark box may make sense--especially if it has a rev-limiter. P...

Re: Gas Mileage

One could expect 14-18 city / highway give any number of factors, motor condition weather and driver technique. The 66-67 came with 3.21 gears considering its 4400 hundred pound weight and 425 cubic inch displacement, and 32 cent a gallon gasoline that was exceptionable. IMHO Driver technique plays...

Re: Octane?

These cars were made to run on 97 with lead. Perhaps, but that would have been with a different rating method for the gasoline. Just like how Europe currently rates the octane level of fuel today. European octane level is "about" four or five numbers higher than US octane ratings. Europea...

Re: Gas Mileage

Lastly, there's a million other things that can affect mileage, such as brakes dragging, tires under-inflated, or three hundred pounds of sandbags (or Mother-In-Law) in the trunk or passenger seat. Another item that could make a huge difference in mileage on an early ('66--'67) Toro, or any Toro th...
