Everybody's Toronado Just Got More Valuable

Postby Otto Skorzeny » Tue Nov 09, 2021 5:58 am

Well, there's one less '66 Toro in the world today.

On the way down Ga 400 I saw grey smoke coming through the vents and it had that weird electrical smell. I was in the left lane, of course, doing about 75. I signaled and started pulling over to the shoulder and the engine died.

When I got it stopped I turned it off, grabbed the fire extinguisher that I keep in the backseat of all my vehicles. Ever since 1985 when my 1968 Camaro caught fire in the driveway I've kept an extinguisher in every vehicle I've ever owned.

Well, as you can see, that didn't help in this case. Another truck stopped and three people from it came over with 2 extinguishers we were pouring it on while one guy tried to disconnect the battery. The starter was spinning over like crazy and the engine actually started and briefly ran until the battery cable was pulled off. The car was turned off and the key was in my pocket. Obviously some wiring got fused together or something by the fire.

Well, we got the fire basically put out under the hood but it had spread to the interior. Once that gets going there's no stopping it.

Don't get the idea that this car burned because it was 55 years old. Modern cars like Teslas and Ford Exploders catch fire all the time.

I strongly recommend carrying a fire extinguisher in the back seat (not the trunk) of every car you own. And not one of those little ones like everybody has at car shows. I'll be buying more and/or larger ones for the rest of my cars.

I'll let you know how the Hagerty claim goes.

The last pic was taken this morning in a parking lot.

I'd rather have the car than the insurance payout.

Yes. It sucks. I'm pretty sad about it. It's insured but I'd rather have the car than the money.

Lots of rare parts will probably end up in the junk yard. Front and rear bumpers - flawless, 5 wheels with trim rings and center caps, front fenders, rare trunk lid with center crease, fuel tank, all of the spare tire and jack hardware, original resonators and exhaust tips, etc.

Even the engine, carb, and radiator are still good. Front clip with grill, headlight doors, etc.

Think there are a lot of owners with interests at these parts here. Or sell it complete to toroguy at Vegas.

I'm not sure I'll be able to get it after the insurance payout. I may have to buy it from them. The tires are only a few weeks old, though. It also has 20 gallons of premium fuel in the tank.

I'f I'm able to buy the wreck back, I'll post it on here. I'm in Atlanta, Georgia.

Holy crap! Was that caused by an electrical fire? I’m sorry this happened to you! What matters more is that you’re alright!

I am so sorry, Otto! I am glad you are safe though, and I hope you are able to retrieve the car for your own closure so to speak.
Wow, that must have been quite a sight for the other folks on highway.
Take care, and thank you for the tips on fire extinguisher.
