That is such a shame, I consider much more so than a new car, which can easily
be replaced by one just like it. Had a 64 have an electrical fire (alternator diode),
but was able to repair it using wiring cut at the junk yard.

One thing I have promoted is adding fusible links to old cars that did not come
with them, they require no attention and serve just to lessen the chance of such
events. Fusible wire of many capacities is easily available to add, in all battery
feeds except the starter.

I have the required liability, but my actual cars are self insured. With a problem I
take the car and do whatever I think should be done, insurance is not involved.
The insurance money I have saved over the decades is probably more than all I
have spent on car purchases, the most expensive car ever for me at $9000 and
most a lot less.

Oh Otto,! So sad for you and the loss of a great 1966 Toronado. My thoughts are gratitude that you are safe and unhurt...except in your automotive consciousness. I don't get to these forums often enough, but I just read of your tragedy. I know how much you've been connected to fellow members through your beautiful car. Having you here is more important than the wheels you drive. I appreciated your comments when I first introduced my car.

I liked your comment about how this was not because it was an older car. Tesla's burn-up too!

In the early 1980's, I drove a 1967 Olds98 and took lot's of guff from a classmate who had just bought a brand new Buick Regal. One day after class he asked for a ride home. What?... where's your car? ... Oh..., it burnt up the day before and I have to go past the tow yard to have it sent to the junk yard!

I'm still really sad about losing that car. I haven't purchased a replacement yet but I am keeping my eyes peeled for a nice Dubonnet '66.

I did purchase another car in the meantime, however. I've wanted a 1930s Packard since I was in high school and I found one I liked.

This 1939 coupe crossed my radar screen and it fit the bill.
