Light Shudder When Braking

Postby hullinger » Sat Nov 03, 2012 6:56 pm

Today I got to spend the day driving my '66 while running a whole bunch of errands. I just got the car last month and today gave me a good opportunity to really evaluate the fine tuning the car needs. One of the items I noticed was a light shudder that develops when I'm braking as the speed decreases below 15 MPH or so. Braking at speeds above that shows no shudder. There is no shudder sensation coming from the brake pedal or steering. The shudder seems to eminate somewhere in the dash or firewall area typically on the drivers side but occasionally on the passenger side. Does this sound familiar to anyone as a common problem? Since this is my first Oldsmobile I'm slowly learning and enlightened by all the engineering feats of these cars.

Kind of sounds like a warped rotor. They are generally worse at low speed.

Taddpole, It looks like I found the shudder. The transmission cooling lines were replaced at some point in the cars past and I found them tapping against the radiator mount. It wasn't a lot of tapping but enough for me to hear it on occasions and reproduce the noise while underneath the car. Anyway a wire tie later and all seems well now.
