1968 Toronado Antenna Mounting & FM Reception Problem

Postby 68RocketAction » Wed Dec 25, 2013 1:32 am

I have been troubleshooting some FM reception issues with my 68 Toronado. I noticed that the top portion of my antenna mount is a little loose. It appears that I needs some kind of 2 prong socket or tool to tighten it up. Does anyone know what size socket or tool I need to get???

I really do not know if this looseness is effecting my FM reception or not. My Toronado is equipped with the factory installed manual antenna and I am working with the AM-FM Stereophonic Radio that has the separate FM multiplex unit. I get AM frequency channels with no problems, but my FM Channels are almost all complete static. I am assuming based on the factory installation diagram that the antenna is grounded where the base bolts solid to the steel wheel well of the vehicle. However I could be wrong. I don't see any kind of grounding wires anywhere... I have already tried testing the ohm resistance on the old antenna coaxial cable thinking that could be my problem. I tested both ends of the inner conductor and outer ground sleeves. Since there was no resistance I am assuming that my cable is good... After reconnecting the cable to the base of the antenna I tested the resistance between the inner conductor to the extended portion of the antennas arm as well as the connectors outer ground sleeve to the base of the antenna where its mounted to the wheel well. There was still no resistance according to my multimeter. However when I would try testing the resistance between the connectors ground sleeve and top of the antenna mount I couldn't even detect a circuit. Honestly, I am not even sure if I should or not... I know it is a very good possibility that my radio is just dirty and full of things that need to be replacing. I just don't want to go to the trouble of ripping that dash apart, send the radio off to be serviced, get it back, and then put everything back together just to find out that I have some sort of antenna problem...

Does anyone have any other suggestion, things for me to try, or to test???

Well the problem is definitely with my radio. A buddy of mine gave me an old junky pioneer that he had laying around his house yesterday. Well I hooked it up in the floorboard of my Toronado today and it played AM and FM like a million bucks. So there is no question I need my original radio serviced or restored...

OMG!!! All my FM Reception issues gone with several squirts of RF control cleaner and lubricant. I feel like a complete idiot for going through all the other loops and bounds… I previously tried spraying QD electronic cleaner on the controls, which did absolutely nothing. However I went by Radio Shack today and got the right stuff…

WoW!!! Not only do I now have FM Channels, I am absolutely blown away by the stereo sound that comes out of this radio… I decided to take a nice relaxing drive down the old winding riving road this evening listing to a local 70’s rock station and I have to say it was absolutely amazing!!!
