66 lower door panel trim

Postby lorne6667 » Thu Nov 12, 2009 11:33 am

what is the correct way to install trim pc. on lower door panel ?
my 66 is obviously missing something,i have trim i bought on ebay and only see the two plastic inserts on either and some other clips that seem to have been snapped on?
the car has been monkied with and i dont see any evidence of how trim was attached.
i don't want to risk using my 67 as a reference and messing that up.
i have fisher body manual but it's not very informative.

It took me a while to figure out what you're asking. You're referring to the outer trim piece on the door, that is about 1" in height and made of stainless. The part is held on by 2 types of clips.

Across the length of the door are pins for mounting clips (about 5 or 6)... like little nail heads welded onto the door. Small metal clips with plastic covering clip onto those pins. The stainless steel piece, when removed, also has two additional different type plastic pieces that slide into the molding and then when pulled to the ends of the molding cannot be removed. Once those 2 pieces are inside the metal trim, the metal trim piece is 'snapped' onto the retainer clips across the length of the door... easiest is to pop the top edges on and then pull down and in. (Opposite for removal... pry up from the bottom with a screwdriver / straight edge carefully from one end to the other.

Finally, once snapped on, a short screw is installed through the door from the inside inner lip edge at the front and back ends of the molding. These screws go into the 2 little plastic end clips described earlier. These 2 end pieces grip pretty solidly... they do a lot of the holding.
