where is the fuel filter on a 1966 Toro?
The FSM and the owner's manual make no mention of one. The diagram of the fuel system in the FSM doesn't show one either.
Is the only filter on this car the little mesh thing inside the fitting where the fuel line enters the carburetor? That's pretty lame.
Is there one somewhere else that I just haven't seen?
Fuel Filter? Where the Heck is it?

Don't laugh that big barrel in/on the front of the carb where the fuel line connects held/holds a small cylindrical pores brass/copper filter 1/2" or so in diameter and 3/4 " long with a light spring that kept it seated but could /would be over ridden if the filter became clogged. later they were replaced with paper looking element. All very good in theory but in the real world they could prove to be very problematic if one should happen to pick up a $#!+ batch of gas!

I figured there was one in there but I didn't think that would be the primary and only filter. What do you prefer, the paper or the brass element? I have one of those bronze ones left over from a '72 Monte Carlo.
Also, which way does the tip of the cone on the bronze one face when installed?
I think I'll put one of those slim glass ones on the rubber line somewhere. Not a lot of room for that, though.

There is a filter sock in the fuel tank which goes over the pickup tube. That is your primary filter. If you ever decide you have to service the tank, and want to put rust preventative coating on the inside, you must remove the sock, or it will just be clogged and you'll get no fuel. There is also a baffle in the center of the tank.

Forgot to add that I would put an inline filter on your fuel line.

Yes, I intend to do so.
Which way is the bronze filter supposed to face? Does the tip of the cone face the fuel tank?

I would tend to think the spring is supposed to push out the filter and so it seat against the incoming fuel. So, spring at back, filter against that, with the indent against the spring. But I haven't used one of those before.

I replaced the filter today. The one that was installed is a plastic cage with a fine screen around it. I like the bronze type - just seems more substantial - so I installed that.
I happened to find a cutaway diagram of the carburetor which shows the bronze filter cut in profile with the small hole toward the carb and the big hole with the cone in the middle facing the fuel tank.
I also installed an inline filter just before the fuel pump.
I'm glad I started looking at the fuel lines a little more closely. Look at the 2nd picture. Good Grief! Who uses PCV hose for a fuel line laying on a hot ass intake manifold?

yo Otto FYI I changed the rear hose (tank to steel line) on the frame rail in 2003 if memory serves I used fuel injection line as it is purported to stand up better against deterioration brought on by the ethanol additive in today's fuel.

That's really good to know. When I saw the PCV hose used for the fuel up front I started thinking about the rest of the rubber lines.
