Fuel sending unit seal

Postby maxsonrj » Sat May 31, 2014 7:50 am

I have a 1969 Toro and am replacing the fuel sending unit. However, the large o-ring that is the seal is cracked and swollen and not reusable. I cannot find a replacement. Anyone have a source or advice? The cracks are such that it would be ok, but the swelling had made it too large for the groove an I cannot compress it enough to assemble it.

Try an O ring supplier. I found oddball O rings for a 1964 Galaxie 500 front suspension at Dixie Bearings.

Formerly Dixie Bearings, now Applied Technologies: http://web.applied.com/

I tried to link individual pages on this site but no luck. You'll need a micrometer to measure your O ring. Or you can buy O ring cord of the proper cross section and make your own: http://www.applied.com/apps/commerce/catalog/catalog.do?e=2&c=346

Since these Toro drive trains were used in GMC Motor Homes, this company has lots of parts for them: http://www.appliedgmc.com/

Years Owned: My first Toronado was a 1968 W-34 with the bucket seats and center console... (weeps gently) It was a New England rustbucket in 1982 after less than 14 years. So sad. But it is what infected me and before I knew it I had another '68, a '69, a '70 and eventually inherited a friend's '67 and another friends '73. After buying my brand new Grand Prix in 1988 I retired the last of my Toronados and pulled the 455 I had rebuilt along the way and put it into storage in a friend's barn where it is to this day.
In Mid September of 2010 I happened to see a repeat of the show where Jay Leno did his 66 Toronado and had an instant remission of the disease which resulted in my purchase of a 1969 in very good condition. I am now in the process of fully rehabilitating it and hope to have it on the road in the spring of 2011.

Hi,

I am not sure if you found a unit but I had my sending unit rebuilt and they sent me a new o-ring. I used these folks and am very happy with the results:

Go to your local hydraulic repair/supply shop (they service big equipment like backhoes/caterpillars that use large hydraulic systems). They have o-rings of all sizes. I tried to get the large o-rings for my 67 Toro that seals the front backing plate/knuckle (had to replace when I refurbished the suspension). No auto parts store could come close to it, but I got both large o-rings for $1 at the local hydraulic shop. If I had to special order them, if I could find the correct ones online, or through the auto parts suppliers, it would have cost me much more. My question to you is if this is actually an o-ring? I haven't replaced mine yet, but getting ready to do so. I'll look up the part number. I know mine looked like melted black goo. I had to repair the entire fuel tank since it was bent up. Although it had no rust inside (unbelievable!) we will coat it with sealer. I am painting it the galvanized metal color -- originally it was just bare galvanized metal. Then it is ready to all go back on the car. Soon, I'll be done with the underneath of my car.
