Alternator Replacement

Postby maxsonrj » Thu Jun 12, 2014 6:40 pm

I replaced my alternator. It seems to be charging fine but my alternator light is now on all the time. I read somewhere about older cars having an external regulator. Can there be a problem with installing a new alternator on a 1969 toro? I assume my new alternator has an internal regulator..

You absolutely don't want an internally regulated alternator installed in a car
with an external regulator (like a 69). I don't even want to think of what might
happen.

On the other hand, you could convert the car by removing the mechanical
regulator and some wires. I think there is even a jumper harness to do this. Bruce Roe

Why do you assume that your new alternator is internally regulated? Did you not purchase an alternator designed for your car?

I meant to put a question mark at the end of that sentence. I did get one from autozone for the car. A post I saw somewhere else had me worried that new alternators had internal regulators. Looks like I need to look else where for the problem. Thanks for your comments.

From my experience you generally have to source your own parts rather than buying a one stop shop kit.

Rock Auto sells the bearings, brushes, brush holders, rectifiers, etc. but not as a complete kit.
