I think I may have asked this before but can't find the thread.

My 425 is still sitting on a stand at the machine shop waiting
to be fired off before coming home.

The water pump that came with it is 5.5" long and does not line up with the other pulleys.

Can any of you confirm that I need a 5" length pump and if so, can you suggest a vendor/part number?

I have the trans out for an inspection and re-seal and I'd like to drag the whole thing home and assemble it over the winter.

You may have a water pump that was intended for an engine without A/C.

Are there any differences between Oldsmobile V8 water pumps?

There are actually three different Olds water pump lengths. The measurement you care about is from the gasket surface of the pump (with the gasket removed) to the front face of the flange that the spacer or fan clutch bolts to. The three pump sizes are:

5.947" - all Olds motors with A/C
5.572" - B and C body without A/C
5.072" - A and E body without A/C

Note that the "with" or "without A/C" really applies to the pulley set that you are using. The pulleys and accessory brackets are designed to match the pump, so if your car had A/C and you removed it but are still using the A/C accessory brackets and pulleys, get the A/C pump.

One other item to note is that some HD cooling cars used the longer A/C style pump even though they did not have A/C.

The motor was apart when i got the car.
I believe the harmonic balancer is original, but the water pump does not line up with either of the balancer pulleys.
Which groove should the belt for the pump ride in?
Do you have photos of your setup?

Not sure if it's going to help, but I could only find one picture that showed my water pump without it being obscured by the alternator or power steering res. I can go take some better pics tonight

might be an optical illusion, but that pump looks a LOT shorter!
Maybe I've been trying to put the pulley on backwards..

The part number should be: 388183. That's for V8 engine equipped with CAC or HD cool for 66-67 Oldsmobile V8. Slightly different for a 1968 engine.
