Looking into upgrading my alternator on my 67'. Came across this post on the forum http://www.toronado.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1421 that suggests using a 1988 chevy caprice 307 alternator as a replacement for better amperage. I'm not familiar with what is necessary when switching to an internally regulated alternator; I've read the post but I don't fully understand what is needed to be done.

Edit:
I think I found a site that covers the conversion in depth albeit a different vehiclehttp://www.novaresource.org/alternator.htm

If you get a late 70s alt, it should bolt right in. Note, you may want to keep the
same pulley dia, there are subtle dia differences. It will reduce maintenance, give
better regulated output, and get rid of some radio static. If you use a very much
bigger alt, prepare for slipping belts and use a bigger wire on the stud.

The output stud wire just bolts as before; you'll need the different 2 prong plug.
My preference is to pull the mechanical voltage reg and the wires to the old alt.
You will be left with the wire from the GEN light that used to go to the reg pin
4; connect it to alt pin 1. The wire that went to the reg pin 3 can be used for
voltage sensing, where the 12V battery starter cable breaks away to the rest of
the car circuits; connect it to the new alt pin 2. The wires between the old reg
pins F and 2, going to the old alt, just go away. I did this to my car. Bruce Roe

The one I'm looking at has 100 amp output: http://www.autozone.com/batteries-starting-and-charging/alternator/duralast-alternator/chevrolet/caprice/1988/8-cylinders-y-5-0l-4bl-ohv/540686_192803_9470/.
I'm hoping that this will handle my aftermarket stereo and amplifier better.
