I don't own a Toronado but have a deep interest in these cars; specifically the 66-67 models. I have been looking at quite a few photos, and I seem to come across some models which have a certain factory item that other cars of the same vintage do not. It is located on the driver inner fender. The appearance is of a filter cannister, but I can't seem to figure out what it is, even after an exhaustive web search. It is near the power steering pump and has a 5/8" to 3/4" hose coming off the bottom. I have included a snapshot of it. What the heck is this item?

Where do the hoses go? That will be the key to its function. Maybe it's an inline power steering filter. I've never seen that before on a '66 Toronado. Could be aftermarket.

Unscrew what looks like a cap and see what's in there. Can you get some pics from different angles?

As I stated, I don't own a Toronado myself, otherwise I could figure this out. I don't believe it is aftermarket because I have seen the same item on many different cars, mounted in the same location. I thought perhaps it was a differential vapor cannister. I've looked through photos of same year Delta 88s and not seen this item, so I believe it is unique to the Toronado. Surely, someone on the forum owns a car with this installed.

Here is another photo from a '66 Toro showing the same part with the same mounting hardware. From this angle, it is a little easier to see the hose routing. You can see that the hose is a pretty good size. I don't see it on many Tornado's, but I have seen it enough to know that it was a factory item due to same mounting location and hardware.

Does that car have an AIR system for pollution control? Maybe it's part of that.
Follow the hoses and see where they go. That will tell you what it does. Does the cap unscrew?

Maybe it's a charcoal canister for the fuel vapor return?

I found a picture of it from Fig. 6EB-11 from my 67 Toro service manual. It's called a "Filter and Silencer Assy". A hose connects to the air pump. California emissions. I had asked the same question on another site ClassicOldsmoble.com

Thanks for clarifying that for me. Interesting that all the cars that I see this item on, no longer have any emissions equipment remaining. I think of all the photos I've seen of 66-67 Toronados, I've only come across one that had the air pump.

The reason they don't is that the A.I.R. pump usually fails and parts aren't available to rebuild it. It also robs power so removing the system makes sense. Most states don't require emission testing on 50 year old cars so there's no reason to leave any of that junk on the engine.
