1. Exhaust heat riser is unhooked and open at all times
2. No paint on the inside of the manifold. I just cleaned it really well before re-installation. That's natural cast iron color.
3. I thought about that but wasn't sure if the paper gaskets would be enough to block the crossover passage.
4. I'm very happy with the Permatex Copper Spray Gasket. I know people who use it for headgaskets, exhaust manifolds, etc. and rave about it.
