How to Change the Front Wheel Bearings

Postby Shglo » Mon Feb 13, 2023 11:19 am

Hi everyone,

I picked up a 1968 Toronado laat August for a steal of a deal. I'm always learning and have been a novice at this sort of stuff, though I've been doing it in a hobby capacity for years, and don't mind tackling things myself vs paying someone to do it. I apologize if my questions don't make sense.

Since I bought it in another province in Canada and took it to Alberta, I need to get an Out of Province Inspection, which lead to me doing lots of work and failing due to a few issues which I've been able to fix, but the one that has stumped me is the front wheel bearings. Rears were no problem. I don't even know how to get at the front ones. I'm not even sure how to get the hub assembly off to change the bearing, let alone how to get the bearing out (if that's even where they are) and replace it so I was hoping someone may be able to shed some light on this for me. So I've got a few questions:

1. How do I get to the front wheel bearings to change them? Are they in the hub assembly? I have the assembly manual but that doesn't really clear things up for me.

2. Both tires rotate when spinning one front wheel, so how do the front bearings even work?

3. Do I need to replace the CV axels too? Is that worth it? They seem ok but not sure. I was looking at this one: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/oldsmobile,1968,toronado,7.5l+455cid+v8,1225651,drivetrain,cv+axle,2288

Thank you so so much in advance! I really appreciate all of you being willing to provide info to a novice like me. :D
Kind Regards,

Shylo
