Help needed: Fuel gauge pegged at FULL

Postby pudland » Wed Sep 12, 2012 9:28 am

Hello all,
The Fuel Gauge in my '66 Toro is pegged at full.
I removed the liner from the trunk and, behold, rusty crap all over the top of the tank where the sending unit is. The wiring post looks just as bad.
I need a new trunk pan but I'm leaning towards finding a new tank and sending unit to be on the safe side.

Any avenues to get the Tank and Sending Unit mainly...? Trunk pan would be nice also...

Thanks in advance,
Adam

I don't believe you can buy a new tank anywhere... IIRC... the same goes for the sending unit.

I've seen sites/people who offer to rebuild your original one, but mine works perfectly, so I never kept any tabs on such things...

My tank had a small hole in it, I got POR-15 fuel tank sealer and used that, then, for extra measure, I coated the entire outside of the tank with POR-15 as well... It was something of a process, but it seems to have worked beautifully, and my tank will now be around, long after the rest of my car is red dust :P The only tip I have on this if you do it... make sure you remove your tank sock before putting in the sealant... Not doing so was something of a PITA for me XD

Thanks for the feedback!

I'll page through fusick.com.....

I'll try the POR-15 as a precaution.

Thanks again,
Adam

FYI
Spoke with usa parts supply.....
He said if its a canister style sending unit, which he believes it is, I have to ship it to them so it can be "converted" for approx $300...

Does this sound right to anyone??

Years Owned: My first Toronado was a 1968 W-34 with the bucket seats and center console... (weeps gently) It was a New England rustbucket in 1982 after less than 14 years. So sad. But it is what infected me and before I knew it I had another '68, a '69, a '70 and eventually inherited a friend's '67 and another friends '73. After buying my brand new Grand Prix in 1988 I retired the last of my Toronados and pulled the 455 I had rebuilt along the way and put it into storage in a friend's barn where it is to this day.
In Mid September of 2010 I happened to see a repeat of the show where Jay Leno did his 66 Toronado and had an instant remission of the disease which resulted in my purchase of a 1969 in very good condition. I am now in the process of fully rehabilitating it and hope to have it on the road in the spring of 2011.

Been there, done that, killed the car (threw a rod!) two weeks after putting the rebuilt fuel sender in... :o

So I recommend using these folks for a rebuild. They did mine very nicely for $149.

I have my Fuel Injected Toronado. Life is good! 8-)
