I've taken apart the final drive and the seals need to be replaced. I made my own cover seal since those didn't seem to be available, and was able to get an axle seal for the driver side. But the passenger side is larger in circumference and haven't been able to get one yet. Any suggestions where I can get those?
I rebuilt my leaky power steering pump, and found out the someone had messed with the steering gear unit. They were going to try to replace leaky pitman arm seals. They took a hammer and chisel and tried to force them out from the top. The result was that when I took the unit apart, some of the needle bearings fell out which they shouldn't do (the bearing housing had been broken by the chisel. Can I get a new needle bearing set, and where are those available? I'm probably going to have to take this to a machine shop unless I can get the other seal repair kit (the only one I had was for the pitman arm). The unit seems a little leaky all over and had never been properly serviced.
The steering gear will be a little more complicated to rebuild. I just don't want the TORO to bleed so much all the time on the garage floor when done!
I have rebuilt my CV joints/boots and cleaned up the axle half shafts. Once I finish cleaning the final drive and get the new seals installed, I'm ready to put that back in the car with the tranny, then the engine is ready to go in next. That's the order I've decided to do it (A little too unwieldy as a unit I think).
I've started on the final mechanical element, the brakes. I need a new proportioning or distributor valve block assembly. Mine is total crapped out. Are those available as a common item? They have the connection for the idiot light on the dash if the brake fluid has leaked out of one end. Mine wasn't connected and was too corroded to work properly I'm sure. I'll be using DOT 5 brake fluid in my brake system.
I have removed the driver door wiring harness to clean and/or replace. So many of the wires and the insulation has been cracked/broken, I'm thinking of having that rebuilt all the way unless I think I can find all the proper color coded wires (may have YnZs do this). My car has the strato bucket seat (4 way control) vs Strato bench (6 way). I also have the power windows and the driver door has the master switch. Beyond that there are courtesy lights that tie into this harness. I have the new rubber boots from Fusik to go around the wire bundle between door and cowl. Any interest by others in having this wiring harness? Would be good to know if I send it in to be rebuilt. Almost every wire had a crappy solderless connector, some 3 in a row which is common for these I think. Time to give those up.
I need some window whiskers for the window rails in the doors. I'm cleaning those up. The driver's door has the two small areas with the whiskers rivets on, so I need to replace those as they are completely worn out. They keep the window in proper alignment and from rattling inside the door when they are rolled down. I am cleaning the electric regulators on the quarter windows as those seem to be salvageable. The two door units had to be replaced.
Overall finishing up rebuilt last few mechanical parts and painting of frame; drive train about ready to go back in. Vinyl dash components all newly redone and look great by Dash Specialists. Instrument panel all new and almost completed (need new sawtooth drive for speed control). Will send pictures soon.
One final question: I have scoured, and pretty much given up. I'll ask once more if anyone knows where to get color coded vacuum tubing? The white and red stripes were co-extruded with the black tubing, whereas the other colors appeared to be painted on. I guess that's my only choice. Oh heck, what's another week striping vacuum tubing? Have to get the right kind of paint though.

Hi,
I'm stuck in the same corner I took apart the final drive for replacing the shaft seals.. and so far I cannot find driver and passenger side. One seal I ordered for the driverrs side doesn't fit.
Did you find the correct seals?
Harald

Check with the guys at Cinnabar Engineering in Sandusky Michigan--GMC Motorhome specialists and always very helpful.
I'd bet they can help you get the correct seals.
