What effect does the variable-vane convertor have? I'm new to Toronados and haven't yet secured service manuals. Thanks!

That switch has no timers or torque sensing. Besides the kickdown function, it sets the torque
converter to high stall at idle, or near max throttle. The switch leaves the converter in low stall
for all normal driving, pretty much like later fixed pitch converters. It is possible to launch in
high stall (performance) with the converter allowing the engine to get into the power band much
faster. This will make shifts much smoother. This is typically set by a timer from release of the
brake. Braking for a curve, etc, you get extra boost when picking up speed again. Sensing of a
request for torque (loss of manifold vacuum) can also give a momentary boost without a
downshift. Doing this electronically doesn't require a connection to the throttle linkage. Bruce Roe
