Hi all,
I have a problem with the ignition switch on my 1966 Toro. About 3 months ago I noticed it was coming loose, but I could start the car by holding the escutcheon (the ring retainer around ignition switch) while turning the key. Then a week ago the key would not return back to the ON position (by normal spring tension) when engaging starter (so I had to do that manually). Now it stopped working completely and does not engage the starter. I looked in the Service Manual and it says the entire Instrument Control Panel must be removed before removing the ignition cylinder lock (the trick where you put the key in ACC and turn counter clockwise while putting the paper clip in the little hole in the ignition switch). Any suggestions? Do I really have to remove the Control Panel? One thing is that the switch is definitely loose - there is space that shouldn't be there between the escutcheon and the panel surface. Any suggestions much appreciated!
Another question - is there an easy way to start it by shorting wires somewhere to get juice to the starter solenoid? Otherwise I have to push the car in the garage up a slight incline!

Re: 1966 Ignition Switch Problem
I don't recall having to remove the instrument cluster or anything to get the ignition out. I believe all you need to do is remove the tumbler.
