Engine problem 1966 Toronado

Postby Jelonek » Wed Aug 14, 2024 12:29 pm

Hello from Germany
in the last time I noticed a little smoke from the oil filter on the right side of the engine on the valve cap
There is no noises and enjoying runs very good and smooth. Oil is perfect no high temperature and normal power.
What do you think? What could it be?
How can I make a diagnosis and what is your first and second choice for this problem?
I tried to download a short film
Best regards from Germany
Wojtek

Hello I also have a 66 with the same issue. When I first got the car my smoke problem looked like yours. I drove it every day for 3 months. The smoke got worse and eventually the engine started pushing oil out of the dipstick and oil fill tube. Cylinder 7 only has 50 compression and there is now a terrible miss. Crankcase pressure, which is what is causing that smoke, is due to worn or stuck rings. I tried numerous piston soaks to no avail. The piston soaks cleaned no carbon off of even the piston head. Currently the vehicle can no longer generate enough power to exceed 60 mph. 3 months ago the smoke looked like yours.

So you can preform or pay for a compression and leakdown test. This will tell you which cylinder is causing the blowby gasses to vent out of that crankcase vent in your picture. There should be none, not even a little is acceptable.

Yes, you're right, we checked the compression and the penultimate cylinder on the right is only half as good as the others. So we already know where it is. My buddy, a drag racer, thinks that we might have a bit of luck and that the seal is bare - a crack between the cylinder and a channel with a breather and oil - that could fit.... but who knows
So next week take everything off and see.

But I also have to replace the frost plugs.
It has absolutely enough power, no oil in the water or air, I took off the valve cap and everything moves freely, no noises, the valve tappets look very good... could a valve also be leaking? let's see

Glad I was able to help. I a valve leaking can also result in loss of compression, but the smoke and crankcase pressure can only be caused by an issue with the piston rings.

Tomorrow I want to put everything down and take a look on the pistons. I make a lot of pictures and I show you what happened and what is the problem
