Trans Tag Decal TH 425

I needed to replace the missing lettering on my tag so I made these decals up to replace the printing on the tag. I make them for all of the Olds 67 thru 70 Th425s and Th 400s in the correct color.
The tag on the left is a NOS tag and the tag on the right has the decal applied over the old tag.

Hi, I'm interested in the OJ tag. I took my trans into the trans shop to have it gone through, and the idiots painted the entire thing with gray paint when they finished, and thus destroyed the paint on the tag. I think these are decals that go over the tag leaving the stamped numbers exposed. I'm interested in purchasing one of these.

These look good keep in mind the 66-69 OJ tags are yellow the 68 is light blue and the 67-70 are black. This also applies to the OM tags 68-69-70 as well

I respectfully disagree. My car has not been fiddled with before my resto, I bought it from the original owner. The OJ trans tag on my 67 was black. I think I have a picture of it from before the transmission shop ruined it with the gray paint. I assure you, it is black, not yellow.

Hi Tim,
Well, was a bit surprised by your statement and for a moment it was 'hum' then the light bulb went on, it jogged my memory with regard to the 67 trans tags I had forgotten about. I did a review of my 67 photos, and this covers a lot of stuff, and come up with only one distinguishable photo where you can see and read the trans tag and it’s black.

So, Tim I very much appreciate the heads up on the subject of the 67 trans tag color.

First some history and over view: Your right transmission shops are notorious for doing what they will with transmissions and their cases, painting is driven in part to ID work done by their shop / franchise what have you and they could care less if it is color correct. Then there is the SWAP tactic: I don’t have the time to wait, and it’s cheaper to R&R with one off the shelf. Well this off the shelf unit could be a 66, so here comes you yellow tag finding its way into 67, keep in mind 40,000 plus 66’s 20.000 67’s the clearly favor finding a 66 on shelve. I have seen yellow tags in 67’s did I get in close and looked at the stampings, it something I maybe could/should done it never to late. Something to remember the 66-67 have the switch pitch converters so without a lot of work they are the only year that will swap. 68-9-70 don’t and subsequently one may find them in any year 68 - 78 an in the Eldorado’s and vice-versa

As far as color goes on the trans ID tag it can vary a bit and I think it's maybe the end of the year change. I have seen black, yellow and peacock blue W-34 ID tags. generally 66-67 are black 68-69 are yellow . Some 68s are black.

I think this is good time for some clarification and though I can not address what was or may have been done on the rear drive A, B and C bodies. I can confidently state what was done with the transmission tag color coding for the Toro Turbo 425 as assigned to Olds /Toronado and that go as follows: with out exception the 66 - 425 transmission tags are yellow, the 67's (as it has been recently brought back to my attention) are black. The 68's are Lt blue again with out exception, the 69' are once again Yellow and with out exception and finally the 70's are Black. It is true that OM W34 /GT tags will be found in all 3 colors 68 - Lt blue, 69 - Yellow and 70 - Black

As the 66-67 are switch pitch transmissions without close inspection it would be possible to see black tag in a 66, one must check though the stamping at the bottom of the tag for this year.

This also applies to 68 -70 non-switch pitch transmission it would be possible to find either of the other two colors in a give year one must the check the stamping. I ave also see AJ the Cadillac variant in a toro and do not recall its color as in most case once the transmission has been through a shop the tag is most generally wiped clean of it original paint.

For those that find this of interested I would encourage them to verify this information against what one see's in the field you should find that is will stand up.

I just experienced the same issue as Doc, I should have known better and removed my transmission tag before is was worked on now all the paint has been removed during the cleaning process.
Just wondering about the lettering on the tags and if they have any significance. Doc, you mention that your car had a black tag with OJ letters, I'm not sure what letters I had other than the O. I found some NOS tags on eBay links are here - http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-Oldsmobile ... c2&vxp=mtr

Both tags are black and for a 68 Toro, mine is a 67. Is that where the OJ comes in? Is OJ for 67? I would like to be as accurate as possible but I don't want to get to anal about it either. A OEM metal tag appeals to me more than a decal but not if the letters are unique and specific to a certain year. Any thing you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.
