1980 Toronado 350 Exhaust Manifold - Where to buy?

Postby johnnygearhead » Wed Jul 09, 2014 6:47 pm

Hey all,

Does anyone know where I might be able to get a set of exhaust manifolds for my Grandfather's 1980 Toronado? 350 gas engine. I ran a search through the forums but there seems to be very little regarding exhaust manis... :-/

One is cracked, and he'd like to replace the pair, as we've got the engine out, rebuilt, and are trying to restore the car to stock functionality and beauty as much as possible; he really likes this car, and it would be a pity if it were to suffer from an exhaust leak! The crack is pretty large- I took the manifold to a machine shop and they recommended replacement over welding/braising.

So, do these manifolds interchange to any other vehicles? I am assuming that they aren't the same as most 350s because the exhaust has to pass over the transaxle. Assuming incorrectly perhaps?

Any options for headers instead? He'd prefer to find something stock, but if there's no choice there's no choice.

I appreciate wisdom of the forum might have. I know the car isn't the greater first gen, but as I said, my grandfather really enjoyed it over the years, and it's been garaged for over 15 years now, and he'd love to see it run well again.

Thank you.

Try looking at local junk yards. Also, Pull-A-Part has an online search feature for its yards nationwide.

Try this too. I have found many obsolete parts through this source:

Thanks. I am familiar with car-part.. but if it's an option, we'd rather get a replacement part than a used one, as a used one runs the risk of cracking again.

Does that mean that no one makes a replacement manifold or headers for these cars?

Bend over, Johnny.

Here's what Summit has for you in the way of manifolds.

Surprisingly, headers are cheaper. (But you'll most likely have to change the rest of your exhaust system to fit them and probably spend more overall)

By the way, no need to apologize for the car not being a first Gen Toro. Personally I think the '79-'85 Toro was the best looking one since the original.

It also wasn't saddled with the miserable HT4100 engine that the Eldorado got stuck with.

In that generation, however, I think the Buick Riviera takes the beauty prize - especially if it's one of the convertibles.

Post some pictures of the car. My rich uncle had one of those when I was a kid. It was the coolest car anybody in the family had. His wife, my Aunt, had a Dodge Dart Swinger - green with the bumble bee stripe. They were cool, hip couple at family holidays - at least with us car-loving cousins!

In 79 the Toro, Riv, and Eldo all used the Olds 5.7L but the pipes went below the trans
to join up. Never saw a problem with these cracking, I might have spares. Later they
put the cross over pipe OVER the trans, this might be the problem. Probably has to do
with an OX sensor and engine computer. Some later Rivs used the Olds engine; from a
5.7L diesel might work. The problem with headers is getting them down the left side
where the trans is. Bruce Roe

I figured headers might be tricky.

Was the exhaust manifold the same across the lines and models for the Olds 350 or was that unique to the Toronado as well?

79 5.7Ls were all interchangeable, then they got into 368. 4100, V6s, 5.0L. Bruce Roe

That's good. If he wants new instead of used, the Summit manifolds should work for him if he's willing to drop five bills on them.

Thank you guys very much.

I got a hold of someone from opgi, and they said the manifolds they make won't work. Whether that's completely true or not, you guys are right, $450 is a bit steep to find out for certain (even though they'd probably refund if they didn't). I'm going to discuss it with my grandfather, and he might go either way, but it does sound like used is the better choice.

I am going to try to post a shot or two of the car now. I don't have any glorious shots yet, only working ones, but I'll see if I can keep an update on the project. Internet connection out here is terrible (I'm porting 2g from my cell phone to my laptop to accomplish this post), as my grandparents live on a ranch in an underdeveloped part of South Texas, but, c'est la vie.

Again, thank you for the responses.
