69 TH425 slipping?
So I've finally got my 69 Toro up and running. but I've noticed she's shifting hard into gear, and not sure if 3rd is slipping or prematurely shifting... As well it takes till I hit 30mph before she shifts same speed every time, and she's getting really "spongy" in drive. I pretty much have to drive in second gear and manually shift into third... And even then still feels spongy. And I'll be sitting at 3k rpm going 65? Somethings amis and I can't put my finger on it. Yes it full of fluid... Not sure if it's the vacuum line connected to the wrong location.. or a vacuum leak. But I would like to know if anyone knows how to rebuild the valve body. And might be interested in a shift kit for better highway mileage if possible I know it's a guzzler but I feel it should get better mileage then what it feels like it's getting.

- Years Owned: 1967 Toronado Deluxe - owned this car since 1995 and am the second owner. Sadly it was cosmetically gorgeous but mechanically and electrically a mess when I got it. It was a feature car at the 1997 Olds Centennial but still wasn't running right then until Sparky Kalkhoff and I swapped out the wrong cam for the correct original. Everything electrical was repaired over the years until the point where the cosmetics became a mess. It's now undergoing its second restoration with lots of new metal to address years of rot courtesy of its Northeast PA roots.

Bruce Roe is the expert here but I can tell you that at one point my '67 would not shift into third without me lifting the throttle at the point of the second-to-third shift. I had the tranny overhauled last year as part of the resto I'm doing and the report was that the clutches/bands were all trashed. The car as 84K miles on it. Hope that gives you some insights.

I was hoping it was the valve body and filter... But I may just need a rebuild... I would like to overhaul it. Maybe I'll finally get the engine clean and painted while it's out! I though something was wrong I though as ouch power there is behind it that she would have a lot more pull then what she's doing...

If the trans is original, its way, WAY overdue for an overhaul. You should see the rubber
seals I pull from transmissions of that era, age will cost you clutch pressure regardless of
mileage. At the first hint of trouble, get the trans worked through before much more
serious and costly damage happens. A trans here is going to get at least a new $30 seal
kit and inspection every couple decades, to be reliable and avoid serious trouble. Easy
for me to say, I don't have to pay a labor charge.
Yes it could need a filter, but last time I took that approach, it failed soon anyway. I doubt
its a valve body, though you could do a swap in the car. And sometimes the governor gear
plastic strips. Bruce Roe
